About the artist: Amedeo Modigliani was a Tuscan sculptor and painter, recognizable by the elongated shapes he created, based on African and Oceanian art.

Created in the likeness of an ancient deity, this magnificent carving was a product of a devotional mania towards sculpture as an act of carving, and the liberation of form from a block of stone. At night the artist would illuminate his sculptures by candlelight, creating a sacred space for his goddesses of stone. Those faced with the spectacle could not escape the power and allure of this beautiful figure.

Modigliani created a series of about 25 sculptures, in the course of his career. The defining feature of the series was the beautifully sculpted, elongated heads.
